Closet Storage - How to Have the Closet of Your Dreams

Closet storage is not something that many of us consider when purchasing our homes; however, having adequate closet storage can make the difference between a cluttered and untidy bedroom and a clean, calm environment. Organising your closet can even affect the way that you look as you are able to more clearly and easily locate and select appropriate outfits.

Closets come in one of several forms. Stand alone closets are useful in that they can be moved from room to room and be taken with you when you move. However, they are often fairly small and it may be difficult to reorganise the storage space within them. Built in closets are usually larger and are often more adaptable. Frequently it is possible to find a way to reorganize or rearrange the interior so that space can be more efficiently used. Walk in closets are generally the most flexible kind of closet storage and can be completely reconfigured if required, although this might take a skilled craftsman and some considerable expense in some instances.

The first step to reorganizing your closet is to reorganize your clothes. This involves taking every single item out of your closet and sorting it into separate piles. The first of these should be the pile of items that is regularly worn and that you want to keep. The second should be items that are infrequently worn but that are still items that you prefer not to part with. Thirdly you should create a pile of items that are suitable for charity donation.

If you are a regular ebayer you can also create a pile of items that you no longer want but which are suitable to be sold. This can help to provide money to help you in your closet reorganisation. Finally you should create a pile of items that are only suitable for the bin. You should also take make sure that you go through the same process with underwear, accessories and shoes.

Having done this examine the items that you want to keep. Count the number of each separate item such as pairs of shoes, dresses that require long hanging, shorter hanging items and accessories. Work out whether the closet space that you have can actually accommodate the items that you have. If the answer is yes, then you have probably already achieved your goals simply by sorting through your clothes.

If however you find that you have inadequate space you need to consider other solutions. Firstly, can your existing wardrobe be adapted to meet your storage needs? Sometimes the purchase of items such as tie racks or the addition of jewellery storage can be enough to make your closet workable. Other clever storage options such as hangers designed to hold several pairs of trousers at a time can also be useful.

If it appears that the closet space that you have is completely inadequate firstly consider whether there is space available anywhere else within your home before making expensive changes. If this is not feasible consider what changes are required to make your closet storage workable.

If you rely entirely on freestanding wardrobes consider whether a built in solution would offer more storage space. If this is not practical perhaps you could change your freestanding wardrobe to a larger one, or add an additional freestanding wardrobe to your home.

Built in closets often have adjustable shelving and rails. If this is the case consider whether you are able to reconfigure your closet to better meet your needs. Alternatively ask a builder or handyman to suggest ideas for the layout of your closet to increase storage space. A walk in closet offers the most flexible storage of clothing. In this case there are multiple closet systems available, and they are usually flexible and adjustable.

Having reconfigured your storage space ensure that you store like things together. Not only should similar items such as pants, dresses and skirts be together but you should also attempt to group them by color. Many people are surprised to find just how many similar items that they have when this simple rule is followed. Once your closet storage is well organised finding the right item and creating coordinating outfits should become simpler and less time consuming.
